Bannerman has written a lively and stimulating overview of Australia's culinary history. It is superbly illustrated with artwork, photographs and documents which support and enhance the text. The author may be known to some readers from his 1996 history of federation cookery A Friend in the Kitchen. This book is not overly scholarly. It has a serious tone but is leavened with wit and interesting detail. (Unrefrigerated milk can be kept sweet indefinitely by boiling every twelve hours!) It is fair to say that the book is ...
