Catholic and Orthodox leaders emerged from historic Christian unity talks in Maryland yesterday and said disputed churches in the former Soviet Union remain the key obstacle to progress.

Those Eastern Catholic churches, which since the 16th century have pledged loyalty to a Western papacy, still raise "thorny" theological and property issues, a concluding communique said.

How so-called Catholic "uniate" churches relate to Orthodox neighbors was not resolved by the 10-day session of 37 delegates at Mount Saint Mary College and Seminary in Emmittsburg, Md.
