`MD 601' Maryland tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) (Reg. no. CV-119, PI 608041) was developed by the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station and released in 1999 because of its multiple disease resistance and good quality characteristics. MD 601 has resistance to tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), wildfire [caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci (Wolf & Foster) Young et al.], and Race 0 black shank [caused by Phytophthora parasitica Dastur var.nicotianae (Breda de Haan) Tucker; syn. P. nicotianae Breda de Haan var. nicotianae G.M. Waterhouse].
