WHO would have thought the Yorkshire Post would prove so popular? Three companies are now lining up to spend maybe [pound]650m to buy the Posts publisher, Regional Independent Media.
Chris Oakley, RIMs chief executive, smiled last week as Guardian Media threw its hat in the ring as a potential buyer. It joins Johnston Press and Gannett, the US owner of Newsquest which has a huge stable of papers including USA Today. Each of the three has registered its interest in buying RIM with the Department of Trade, which rules on proposed acquisitions of newspaper publishers of a certain size.
