Vines add a special dimension to any garden. Whether clambering up a lamppost or twining through a trellis, a flowering vine lifts both eye and spirit with its purposefully vertical presence.
By their very nature, however, most vines seek new heights and some aren't very polite about getting there. Just ask anyone in the Southeast about kudzu's boorish behavior.
Gardeners should be extra cautious when planting an aggressive vine. Sure, that chain-link fence is ugly. And under the circumstances, quick cover may be desirable. But with that fast-growing climber, a courteous gardener also takes an oath to ''do no harm.''
