Gypsy moths, those leaf-eating pests, have been fluttering, crawling or hitching rides into northern Illinois for decades.
But as the moths' numbers in the Chicago area rise, their potential to harm has grown so dramatically that forestry experts have shifted their focus from eradicating the moths to merely slowing their spread.
"The population of this pest is so far and wide that complete eradication isn't feasible economically or realistic to expect," said John Pence, natural resources manager for the Wheaton Park District.
