When the Elgin Public Museum reopens Saturday after being closed two years for a $1.3 million renovation, visitors may be a little surprised at what they find.

"The days of staff hammering display cases together are over," administrative assistant Peggie Stromberg said.

The museum's low-tech exhibits and 1920s displays, which reflected the look-but-don't-touch philosophy common to museums years ago, have been replaced by state-of-the-art interactive kiosks, life-sized dioramas and child-friendly, hands-on displays.
