Jul. 25--Debbie Brooks made the kind of career move in her mid-40s that most people only dream about.
When Central Fidelity Banks Inc. was taken over by Wachovia Corp. in early 1998, Brooks was one of 15 senior managers given the choice to join the new organization or take a golden parachute.
She chose the 'chute -- a lucrative three-year package that gave her the means to stop working, see the world and take stock of her future.
"I was in a great position at age 45," she recalled recently. "I could do whatever I wanted to do."
