SAN FRANCISCO -- Adding ultrasound to mammography screening greatly improves the ability to detect cancers in women with dense breasts, Dr. Thomas M. Kolb said at the annual meeting of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.
In a prospective screening study of more than 18,000 women, Dr. Kolb and his associates at Columbia University in New York found that in women with dense breasts, ultrasound alone detected 22 (25%) of 89 breast cancers that had gone undetected by mammography and physical examination.
In dense breasts, ultrasound alone detected 21 (29%) of 72 invasive cancers, 22 (37%) of 59 nonpalpable cancers, and 16 (50%) of 32 ...
