QUEBEC CITY -- There is no good way to diagnose lactose intolerance in an adult.
The patient's symptom history is too nonspecific. Symptoms that are triggered during a lactose challenge test are somewhat more reliable but are still inadequate, Dr. David C. Ford reported in a poster at the annual meeting of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology.
A lactose breath hydrogen test eventually may become the diagnostic standard, but more data are needed to document its clinical relevance before it can be used with confidence, said Dr. Ford of the division of gastroenterology at McMaster University; Hamilton, Ont.
