Jul. 26--Matt Wilson, executive editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, picked up the first San Francisco edition of the San Jose Mercury News on Tuesday and scanned the new local section. The main story dealt with the city's notorious parking shortage and the violence faced by parking-control officers.
"I see they've discovered the parking problem in San Francisco," Wilson said sarcastically. "I'm sure that came as a revelation to most of our residents."
Told of Wilson's remark later in the day, Susan Goldberg, managing editor of the Mercury News, responded in kind:
