Jul. 27--Every bounding step that meter reader Gary Pearson takes in his size 10 Nikes carries him closer to one more meter, and closer to history.
Pearson has been reading those glass-enclosed kilowatt counters for Indianapolis Power & Light for 41 years, recording numbers from as many as 2,000 a day.
On some days, he pushes his whippet-thin, 60-year-old frame 10 to 15 miles. All on foot. He's never counted the miles, figuring the tally might scare even such a dedicated pavement pounder.
"I've walked to the moon, and I'm on my way back," he says.
He's coming back to a changing world.
