ON MAY 4, 1970, at Ohio's Kent State University, the Ohio National Guard opened fire on several thousand rioting anti-Vietnam War demonstrators who were protesting President Richard Nixon's decision to escalate fighting in Cambodia. In thirteen seconds, thirteen students fell; Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder died, one student was permanently paralyzed and the others were wounded.
