FOOTBALL has always been more than a willing patsy for government smokescreens.

Twice a year, media-friendly stars are lured to Buckingham Palace where three letters are thrown after their names for "services to football", which ensures their grinning top-hatted gob makes the "And Finally" bit of the ITV news, while the Prime Minister's rich, bribing cronies sneak out the tradesman's entrance clutching a seat in the House of Lords.

The whole antiquated, kow- towing spectacle is almost as depressing as watching our foremost footballing knight of the realm ...
