For many eastern Massachusetts vacationers, the Berkshire Mountains are somewhere way out there: beyond the Quabbin Reservoir, beyond the Connecticut River, serving mostly to prop up the state's western frontier.
The Berkshires, some reasoning goes, are best visited in the winter, when downhill and cross-country skiing are the chief attractions.
Indeed, my introduction to the region took place on a high school ski trip some years - OK, a lot of years - back. We stayed in a funky hostel, we rode balky, mitten-ripping rope tows up middling hills and hung around until our feet froze.
And we also endured a mandatory side trip to Hancock Shaker ...
