With FDA's approval to irradiate eggs to kill harmful bacteria comes a barrage of comments from critics and supporters. FDA found that while irradiating eggs would lower the food safety risks and cause no harmful side effects, the eggs also would contain less vitamin A. But, FDA felt that consumers generally get enough of the nutrient from other foods. FDA said that irradiation can help to lower the level of salmonella bacteria in eggs, since pasteurized eggs are still only available in limited markets.
