On 26 July, the European Commission put forward a proposal for a Council Regulation implementing the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1306(2000) of 5 July. The move follows the common position adopted by the EU Council of Ministers on 20 July. The Resolution calls on all United Nations members to ban the import of rough diamonds from Sierra Leone, except those with a certificate approved by the competent UN authorities.
