Seventeen massasauga rattlesnakes were released into a remote part of the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge Monday as the second part of a two-year research project aimed at seeing if the snakes, reared in captivity, can survive in the wild.

The endangered massasauga is one of two poisonous rattlesnakes native to Wisconsin. But unlike its cousin, the timber rattler, the massasauga is fast disappearing. Bounties and destruction of wetlands, the snake's favored habitat, have taken their toll.
