Serious talk about public education should start where it stops, Jean H. Bankos tells people - ``eyeball-to-eyeball'' with the students affected.
Bankos knows the view. She was ``eyeball-to-eyeball'' with Norfolk students for almost 30 years, most recently teaching social studies to sixth-graders at Lafayette-Winona Middle School. Today, her classroom grows a bit.
She takes over as the new president of the 56,000-member Virginia Education Association, an advocacy group for educators and the state arm of the National Education Association.
