United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has designated Aug. 1-7 as World Breastfeeding Week. Devised to encourage breastfeeding worldwide, the merits of which range from lower infant morality rate to better mental health for children as well as mothers, the Korean chapter is actively promoting it.
Together with the group Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) Korea, they have named 13 baby-friendly hospitals that encourage breastfeeding by placing the newborn and mother in the same room, and offering education on breastfeeding. Four more hospitals were appointed yesterday in a ceremony hosted by the UNICEF at its headquarters in Chongno, central Seoul.
