The Alsace-Lorraine region of France fuses German and French influences in its architecture, cuisine and culture. It is not French, not German, but distinctly Alsatian or Lorraine, as any local will tell you.
The city of Nancy in Lorraine offers an authentic introduction to the region because it is large enough to house museums and shops, but small enough to let you experience local culture - there are no tourist traps here. What Nancy is known for is art nouveau - the largest collection is housed in the quaint cottage-cum-art museum Musee de l'Ecole de Nancy - and its food, especially chocolate and cheese.
