PHILADELPHIA - Sen. John F. Kerry remained secluded at his Idaho retreat and swore his staffers to silence about his growing vice-presidential prospects yesterday as Democrat Al Gore neared a final decision.
Kerry is near the top of a shrinking group of potential running mates, and many Democratic insiders and officials close to Gore view the Massachusetts senator as the favorite, although the Gore camp wasn't showing its hand.
"It's down to six (candidates) and one wild card," Gore, vacationing in coastal North Carolina, advised reporters as he strolled on the beach with his wife, Tipper, yesterday.
