Aug. 4--Several Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market grocery stores are about to make their Dallas-Fort Worth debut.
The first opens Wednesday in the Collin County town of Murphy, and at least five others are scheduled to open by the end of the year, said Nef Garcia, Wal-Mart spokesman. "Several more are in the pipeline," he said.
Wal-Mart's version of a grocery store is bigger than a Walgreens and smaller than a Tom Thumb, but the concept is getting swept up in the backlash that neighborhood groups have been staging against big-box retail because of traffic and other issues.
