SIR Alec Guinness, the "man with a thousand faces", has died aged 86.
The star of dozens of the world's most successful movies had been in hospital since Thursday.
He was one of the country's best loved actors who played a variety of roles from musicals and farce to sci-fi and war movies in his 67-year career.
Sir Alec made good films the more memorable. To mediocre ones he lent a touch of class.
He will be best remembered for his portrayal of the obsessive Colonel Nicholsan in Bridge Over The River Kwai, for which he won an Oscar.\
