Hot chilies and Billy the Kid in south-central New Mexico
The flavor of Old Mexico wraps around Las Cruces like a bright serape. Located by the flowing Rio Grande north of the border with Mexico and Texas, the city of Las Cruces is New Mexico's second largest and one of the United States' fastest growing. At the heart of the fertile Mesilla Valley, it is surrounded by pecan orchards and fields of chilies and onions, making it a fitting home for the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum. Here the history of the region's agriculture is documented, quilts and hand tools are displayed, and milking and old blacksmithing demonstrations keep farming traditions alive.
