The icky, hot and sticky dog days of summer are here, and that means taking a few extra precautions for the safety of man's best friend and his kitty buddies.

One of the biggest summer health concerns for dogs is preventing heatstroke, said Sheri Buksa, a veterinarian with Animal Medical Clinic in Wheaton.

"During the summer months, if an animal must be outside, you need to provide shelter or a shady area, and water at all times," she said.

This is especially important for dogs that are dark in color, or are a double-coated breed, like Chows or Siberian Huskies.
