The manner of Alec Guinness's death was as private as his life. Few had even realised the 86-year-old star was ill, although the facts as they filter through indicate he had been sick for some time.
There was no fuss and no drama when he was taken from his home in Steep Marsh, Hampshire to King Edward VII Hospital in Midhurst on Thursday.
And the news of his death on Saturday night remained secret for nearly 24 hours until his family felt ready to share their loss.
