Joseph Hamburger, former holder of the Pelatiah Perit Chair of Political and Social Science at Yale University, was completing John Stuart Mill on Liberty and Control at the time of his death in 1997. The book is a revisionist interpretation of Mill, portraying him as willing to subordinate individual liberty to "the introduction of inhibitions, moral restraints, and social pressures" required to regenerate society and root out selfishness (xi).
