The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920, commemorating the success of the women's suffrage movement. Shortly after World War II, the League of Women Voters of the Barrington Area was established.

This volunteer organization is nonpartisan, and does not campaign for or against any candidate. They do, however, become actively involved in studying and promoting issues important to citizens. Studies by the Barrington league have contributed to many community improvements, including the establishment of the Barrington Area Council of Governments, and the Barrington Park District's KEEP program.
