Who controls the purse strings in our house?
The husband and wife stroll into Carol Nathan's Framingham, Mass., office. Twenty minutes later, their relaxed demeanor is gone. Their chairs, side by side when the hour began, now are turned toward each other combatively. The man's arms are crossed, and he glares at the Navajo rug. "I still think we're on an upward spiral and ought to stay put," he says. The woman's voice is strained, almost shrill: "We should look at what we have and be thankful and then move on."
