In my March 3 column I explored the question of whether or not Wisconsin needed a poet laureate and quoted a local writer who questioned why an already underpaid poet would want to be Wisconsin's laureate. This person said, ``Serious poets know the value of their work.''
Since March, Gov. Tommy Thompson has requested that a committee be formed to name a state poet laureate. The issue continues to stir debate among writers and citizens alike.
A recent e-mail from John Lehman -- Rosebud publisher, poetry editor of the Wisconsin Academy Review and one of the people deeply concerned with this issue -- revisited the debate. Writes Lehman:
