SOLDEN, Austria - Tyrol is a magical place. It isn't just the glittering, mountainous landscape that enchants in Austria's alpine wonderland; it's the people. They are friendly, helpful, generous, trusting, and - most important amid present-day travel nightmares - honest and law-abiding.
The locals have a joke to describe themselves: "Bist ein Tiroler, bist ein Mensch" - "If you're a Tyrolian, you're a real person." I would make that read "a Mensch with a heart."
I become aware of that early during this hiking trip among the Tyrolean peaks. I dine in a bustling restaurant near my cozy pension here. As always, when the security of hotel safes ...
