The Navy's newest, most advanced nuclear attack submarine could find itself berthed on Hood Canal, Pentagon officials said yesterday.
The USS Jimmy Carter, under construction at the Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, Conn., would replace the nation's sole spy submarine, the Bangor-based USS Parche, in 2003. Its top-secret technology would set the stage for undersea espionage missions well into the next century, the officials said.
No formal decision has been made where the Jimmy Carter will be based, but several Pentagon sources indicated Bangor will be the initial favorite for the submarine's home port because the shore-based Navy command that controls ...
