There is something comforting about an old town that sits close to a railroad, a town that no longer even looks up when the train rattles by.
I like Villa Rica, which named itself for a vein of gold. I like sitting inside the cozy Chinese restaurant on Main Street, across from the tracks, trying to imagine this peaceful place as a boisterous mining town.
The gold didn't last, and Villa Rica eventually proved itself rich in another way: its people. It doesn't take Black History Month to remind me of one enormous talent who came from here. I hum the songs of one Villa Rican with regularity.
