As a former Mercer Island player, Sammamish coach Travis DeCuire knew the nuances of the Islander program as well as anybody.
For him, there was one simple explanation for Mercer Island's decisive 72-57 victory in last night's Kingco 3A championship game. And it wasn't tradition, discipline or coaching, all for which Mercer Island is known. The Islanders went blue-collar.
``They wanted it more than we did,'' said DeCuire, a first-year coach.
The result was a far cry from the teams' last matchup: a 54-46 Sammamish victory on Jan. 29.
``It looked like we switched roles,'' DeCuire said.
Mercer Island played that game without one ...
