Mercer Island took its first step toward the Class 3A state tournament with a 65-45 victory over Seattle Prep last night in the first round of the Sea-King District Playoffs at Bellevue Community College.

The Kingco Conference champions, ranked second in the state, took control early.

Not many teams walk away from a 20-point victory unhappy, but according to both the Islander players and coaches, the team must improve on defense if it expects to win state.
