LANGUAGE A CASUALTY OF CULTURE WARS.(Editorial)

As one who loves language and words, I recently became a delighted owner of that ultimate source of the English language, the Oxford English Dictionary. Mind you, all I could afford was the ``compact'' one-volume version. The real thing (20 volumes) would have required me to mortgage my wife, children and the family dog.

My compact version came with a powerful magnifying glass, an object of beauty in itself. The magnifying glass enlarges the text to a size legible with the help of reading glasses in the glare of a 200-watt light bulb.
