Legend has it that the bridal shower began several centuries ago when the daughter of a rich merchant fell in love with a poor young man. Her father disapproved and denied her a dowry, so before the couple married, the townspeople ``showered'' them with gifts that enabled them to set up a home together.
Later, the Victorians reinforced the shower idea by placing small gifts in an umbrella and opening it over the head of the bride-to-be.
A wedding shower is still an excellent way to provide a friend with useful gifts. Planning the shower around a theme that is tailored to the couple's interests makes it even more special.
