Article: A BIG STEP FORWARD IN IMPLANT RESEARCH UW METHOD MAY BOOST BODY'S HEALING PROCESS.(News)

Bioengineers at the University of Washington are getting closer to making materials that won't be attacked by the body, a discovery that could make millions of medical implant devices work better and last longer with fewer complications for patients.

The research, published today in the journal Nature, marks a major advance in the search for an anatomically friendly material.

In the paper, Buddy Ratner, director of the UW's Engineered Biomaterials Center, and bioengineering graduate student Galen Shi describe a technique for making a coating that could help initiate the body's healing process instead of triggering the immune system to attack.
