A plethora of unusual, ethereal sounds filled St. James Cathedral Sunday night, during a fascinating concert of music that required the use of a glass armonica, an ondes martenot, a celesta, and a big choir of soprano voices, as well as more familiar instruments.
The centerpiece, and the inspiration for the concert, was Messiaen's ``Trois petites Liturgies de la Presence Divine,'' conducted by cathedral music director James Savage. It's an act of devotional love in music, giving an aural sense that all creatures on earth are praising God with a joyful noise arising out of a well of happiness.
