It looks like judicious planning when a team brings in free agents who pan out - and a foiled get-rich-quick scheme when they don't.
There never are any guarantees when players change teams, only the annual certainty that some clubs will dabble and the wealthier ones will splurge on free agents.
The Arizona Diamondbacks took the latter approach, trying to accelerate the growing process and contend this year in their second season. After going 65-97, they committed $118.9 million to six free agents: pitchers Randy Johnson, Todd Stottlemyre, Armando Reynoso and Greg Swindell, center fielder Steve Finley and first baseman Greg Colbrunn.
