Playwright Horton Foote plants his work right there in the middle. What a sense of balance the man has. Sweetness-and-light, yes, but not too much. Bitterness-and-gloom, yes, but enough is enough.
Foote's most famous, and most oft-produced play, ``The Trip to Bountiful,'' is running at Taproot Theatre. Director Scott Nolte joins right in with Foote's subtle balancing act. His production is funny, but it's not really a comedy. It's poignant, but not tragic.
Though easygoing, Nolte's show is thoroughly engaging. He and his actors treat us as adults, capable of enjoying ambivalence and subtlety. In the absence of villains and victims, heroes and heels, ...
