For gays and lesbians at the University of Washington, this has been a year of benign neglect.
When Matthew Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student, was beaten and left to die in Laramie in October, UW President Richard McCormick was silent even though other university presidents condemned the killing.
A proposal for a dormitory floor geared toward the needs of gay and lesbian students, which came at a time when anti-gay graffiti was found in one dorm, was rejected by the UW housing office.
And an advisory committee on gay and lesbian issues that McCormick agreed to appoint months ago has yet to materialize.
