Norm Dicks, the gruff linebacker from Bremerton, and Al Gore, the smooth-talking newsman from Carthage, Tenn., were rivals when they first met because they had something in common: they were the two best-connected members of Congress' 1976 freshman class.
But Gore and Dicks quickly became personal friends and political allies. They will be together in Seattle today as Gore touches down on the last stop of a tour launching his campaign for the White House.
