Article: HANFORD SETS UP SCREENING FOR BERYLLIUM WORKERS COULD GET COMPENSATION.(News)

Thousands of Hanford workers who may have been exposed to beryllium, an element used in nuclear weapons production, could be compensated by the U.S. government for illness related to their exposure under legislation proposed yesterday by the Clinton administration.

The Hanford Nuclear Reservation has already set up a beryllium screening program for current and former workers, said Mike Talbot, Hanford spokesman. So far, 196 former workers have volunteered for the screening, and 16 current workers are being tested for potential exposure.
