The queen of vines bursts on the spring scene with blossoms as big as saucers. These hybrids, unlike the early Clematis armandii and spring companion C. montana that are a mass of small flowers, stand out by virtue of their size - sometimes 10 inches across. By midsummer, when the garden seems to slow down a bit, the early clematis are by now reduced to fuzzy, pinwheeled seed heads; still pretty, although in a more subtle way. But the show isn't over yet, because in midsummer, there are more clematis to be had.
