Far from the well-trodden paths of the Alps, the High Tatras beckon to hikers and skiers as Eastern Europe's version of mountain paradise - spectacular, serene and unthronged.
A four-hour hike rewards the visitor with mile-high vistas that make one wonder when these jagged mountains will be ``discovered'' by the masses.
After passing waterfalls and only a few hikers, you come upon a small, azure lake, one of more than 120 scattered through the mountains. Through the mist you see and feel the mighty presence of the Tatras' tallest peak, Gerlachovsky (8,761 feet).
All is silent in Slovakia's largest national park. Suddenly, a commotion disrupts ...
