An ammonia leak at a seafood plant here sickened at least 20 people last night, prompting authorities to shut down a six-mile stretch of Interstate 405 and cordon off several blocks in town.
``The ammonia odor was so strong it almost knocked me out,'' said Toby Rasco, one of those sickened. ``When I was gasping for air, I was really gulping ammonia. Now I know how it feels to be drowning.''
Rasco reported the leak to police at 9:26 p.m. He was making a delivery to Orca Bay Seafoods in the 800 block of Powell Avenue Southwest when he detected the smell, which appears to have come from a storage tank.
