Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, will announce today that they are giving at least $1 billion to a new scholarship fund to help minority students pay for college.
The gift dwarfs previous giving by the 5-year-old Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and is only the second billion-dollar bequest to a single cause. The first was a $1 billion gift from Ted Turner to the United Nations.
A spokesman for the Gates Foundation, which has assets of more than $17 billion, refused to discuss the initiative yesterday.
