All plays are autobiographical in some sense, according to Warren Leight. ``So the writer places his story in medieval France,'' Leight says. ``Still, if you look closely you find that this character is like his dad, that character is like his mom and this other character represents the playwright himself.''

Moving right along from medieval France to 20th-century Manhattan, we find that Gene and Terry are very much like Leight's father and mother, while Clifford clearly represents the playwright himself. Gene, Terry and Clifford are the major players in Leight's 1999 Tony Award comedy drama ``Side Man,'' which opens Thursday at A Contemporary Theatre.
